Sam and Dean meet Gordon, a fellow demon hunter who has been systematically killing vampires in a small town, and Dean immediately bonds with the older man. However, after Sam meets with the lead vampire and discovers they are actually peaceful creatures who survive on cattle blood, he decides not all supernatural beings are evil and forces Dean to choose whether he will side with Sam or Gordon.
Heading towards Red Lodge, Montana in a beautifully refurbished and rebuilt Impala, Dean and Sam are investigating the beheading of a couple of people and some cattle mutilations. They get there and, after speaking to the local sheriff, bluff their way into the morgue to look closer at the body and head. They are expecting some kind of satanic symbol, but find none. Filled with disgust, Sam opens up the dead girl's mouth and both boys are shocked to find a set of vampire fangs - she wasn't an innocent, she was a vampire.
They head to a nearby bar and start asking questions, drawing the attention of a man, Gordon. He follows them outside to an alley and the boys discover that Gordon is another hunter who has been tracking these vampires for a long time. He knows of John's death and offers his condolences, before telling the boys he doesn't need their help and walking away. That night, Gordon is hunting a vampire but almost gets himself killed. He is saved when Dean and Sam rush in and kill the vampire. Sitting in the bar later on, Gordon and Dean discover they have a lot in common, while Sam gets more and more annoyed. He leaves them and heads back to the motel.
Sam phones Ellen at the Roadhouse for advice on Gordon. She explains that he's a great hunter, but is trouble, and recommends the boys leave him alone. Sam thanks her and hangs up. After going outside to get a drink from a vending machine, Sam goes back into his room, only to be attacked and knocked unconscious. When he wakes, he is tied to a chair in a room with two vampires, one of whom was the bartender they spoke to earlier. The female vampire, Lenore, explains to him that they are trying to live peacefully - they feed off animals not humans - and just want to be left alone, but they are being hunted. To prove themselves to Sam, they release him without a scratch.
He tells Dean what happened, but Dean would prefer to believe Gordon, until he finds that Gordon has stolen the keys to the Impala so the boys cant follow him to the vampire nest. They hotwire the car and Sam recalls the route to the nest. By the time they get there, Gordon is already there. He has Lenore tied up and is torturing her with a knife covered in dead man's blood, which is poison to a vampire. He tries to prove to Dean and Samthat she is evil by grabbing Sam and cutting his arm, dripping Sam's blood onto Lenore. She bares her fangs as though about to feed, but she resists, turning her head away and retracting her fangs. Dean finally believes, and trains his gun on Gordon, allowing Sam to pick Lenore up and leave with her.
A fight ensues between Gordon and Dean, with Dean the eventual victor. He leaves Gordon tied to a chair in the nest, knowing that no-one will find him for a few days. Sam tells Dean that Lenore and the others got away safely, and Dean begins to worry - what if they'd killed other creatures that weren't evil? Sam tells him that they did the best they could...
