Official Episode Description

Two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, witness their mother's paranormal death as children and grow up trained to fight by a distraught father who wants nothing more then to hunt down the thing that killed his wife. Sam escapes to college to start a new, normal life, but gets pulled back in after Dean shows up on his doorstep to tell him their father is missing. Following clues from an eerie phone message from him, the boys travel to a small town and encounter a vengeful spirit called the "Woman in White" who then starts to haunt Sam.

Summary

22 Years Ago : Mary Winchester is killed by something supernatural. Her husband John, alerted by her screams, finds her floating on the ceiling above baby Sam’s crib. As he watches in horror, she bursts into flames, alighting the whole room. John hands the baby to four-year-old Dean, telling him to get out of the house while he tries to save his wife. He fails but manages to get himself and the boys out.

Present Day : Sam, now 22 years old and a student a Stanford University, has spent the evening at a Halloween party with his girlfriend, Jessica. In bed that night, he hears the sound of someone walking around the house. Getting up to investigate, he finds his brother Dean, who he hasn’t seen in two years. Dean explains that their father has gone missing while hunting a supernatural being. He needs Sam’s help to find him. Sam agrees to go along, albeit reluctantly.

They arrive in Jericho, California, and start tracking what they believe to be a Woman in White, following their fathers trail. In a motel room, they discover his journal and all his notes - things he would never have left behind on purpose.

They discover a set of co-ordinates in the journal - an old trick which John used to use to let the boys know where they needed to go. They finish tracking down the Woman in White and manage to exorcise her. Dean asks Sam to go with him to the location John has left for them. Sam refuses, reminding Dean that he needs to get back to Stanford for an interview for Law School.

Dean drops him off and says goodbye. Sam heads up to bed, expecting to find Jess there. When a drop of blood lands on his face, he looks up to see Jess on the ceiling. In an identical way to how his mother died, Sam watches helplessly as Jess bursts into flames. Once again, Sam is saved by his brother pulling him from the burning building.

With nothing left to keep him in California, Sam agrees to accompany Dean in the search for their father and the thing that killed Jess and their mother.

Deleted Scenes

  • The first deleted scene is the very first scene in the present day. The on-screen caption says "Stanford University, Palo Alto, California. Present Day". We open to see one of Sam's friends (who is dressed as a zombie) meet up with Sam and Jess on their way to a halloween party. He has a go at Sam for not dressing up, but Sam insists that he just doesn't like Halloween - something his friend cannot understand.
  • The second deleted scene is towards the end of the episode, after Dean has dropped Sam back off at his apartment. We see a clip of Dean in his car, interspersed with the footage of Sam in the apartment. Dean looks at his watch and turns the car around.
  • The final deleted scene extends the final scene of the episode. After Dean walks away from the crowd outside the burning apartment building, he asks Sam if he's okay. After Sam answers, we see the familiar trunk slamming moment. In this version, we watch the boys drive off past the fire trucks.

Notes

  • Mary dies on 2nd November 1983.
  • The nursery clock stops at 20:12
  • Both Mary and Jess die in exactly the same way. In both cases, they die above Sam’s bed.
  • Sam scored 174 on his LSAT.
  • The co-ordinates that John leaves for Dean are 35-111.
  • Dean knows how to pick locks, using just a paperclip.
  • The registration of Dean's car is KAZ 2Y5 and it's a black 1967 Chevy Impala

Cultural References

  • We’re not exactly the Bradys.
And I’m not exactly the Huxtables.

Sam and his friend are discussing family relationships. The Brady's were the family in TV's "The Brady Bunch". Two previously married people got married, bringing all their children together under one roof. They were known for living 'happily ever after'. The Huxtables are the family from "The Cosby Show", who were an extremely well-adjusted upper class black family.
  • I love the smurfs.
Dean refers to the t-shirt that Jessica is wearing when he meets her. The smurfs are little blue characters that existed in the childrens TV show "The Smurfs". The ones on Jessica's t-shirt seem to be Smurfette (the female with blond hair) and one of the male smurfs who isn't identifiable.
  • So he’s working over time on a “Miller time” shift.
This is Sam's first indication that he suspects his Dad is off drinking somewhere. He is referring to the beer, Miller.
  • He’s probably got Jim, Jack, and Jose along with him.
When Sam is talking about his Dad being missing, he is suggesting, again, that John is off drinking. Jim is Jim Bean, the whisky. Jack is Jack Daniels (also a whisky) and Jose is Jose Cuervo, a brand of tequila.
  • I slowed the message down and ran it through Goldwave.
Goldwave is a computer programme that is used to edit and analyse audio files.
  • We were just leaving. Agent Mulder. Agent Scully.
Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are the two FBI agent main characters from the TV show "The X-Files", which Supernatural is often compared to.
  • Thank you, Unsolved Mysteries
Unsolved Mysteries was an American TV show starring the late Robert Stack. It documents real-life homicides and/or abductions and other crimes.
  • No chick flick moments.
A chick flick is a term used to describe any film aimed at a primarily female audience. Examples would be "Bridget Jones' Diary" and anything with Hugh Grant in it.
  • Five-0. Take off.
When Dean see's the Police hanging around the motel, he warns Sam. 5-0 is a reference to the TV show "Hawaii Five-0" that centered around the fictional Hawaiian state police department. The term "Five-0" was adopted by American youth culture as a slang term for police.
  • We talking like misdemeanor kind of trouble, or, uh, squeal-like-a-pig trouble?
Dean is making a reference to the film Deliverance in which one of the main characters is forced to "squeal like a pig" before being raped.
  • What were you thinking shooting Casper in the face?
Casper the friendly ghost was a cartoon character who was originally created in the early 1940's.

Behind The Scenes

  • Every street referenced in this episode is a real street in Toledo, Ohio - Eric Kripke's home town.
